Matthew is a Partner in the London office of Johnson Law Group. He has experience across a range of high-value disputes, in particular group litigation, and his work frequently involves cross-jurisdictional issues. Most recently he acted for the Claimants in the ground-breaking “Dieselgate” Pan-NOx litigation against 13 car manufacturers, including having conduct the litigation against Peugeot/ Citroën/ DS (as co-lead), one of the four lead Pan-NOx cases, as well as the cases against BMW (co-lead) and Fiat Chrysler/ Suzuki (lead).
Previous experience includes: a judicial review concerning the government’s hotel quarantine scheme and article 5 ECHR, the right to liberty; acting for insurers of an international financial institution in relation to a US$700 million unauthorized trading loss; acting for a cedent in an arbitration relating to damage caused in Thailand during the May 2010 “Red Shirt” protests; and acting for the liquidators of a Greek telecommunications company claiming in excess of EUR one billion. Matthew also spent three years at access to justice charity LawWorks, where he managed projects providing pro bono advice to small not-for-profits and representation to individuals in respect of welfare benefits, unpaid wages, and community care packages for children with life-limiting illnesses.
